The Silver Saver Campaign has been created in response to one of the most popular motions passed at the 2012 Northern Ireland Pensioners Parliament. That being:

The Northern Ireland Pensioners Parliament calls on food retailers to introduce a pensioner ‘Discount Day’ to help older shoppers cope with the rising cost of living and enable them to maintain a balanced and healthy diet.

The motion was passed with a majority of 99%.

89% of those at NI Pensioners Parliament said if a supermarket they didn’t normally shop in introduced a pensioner discount day, they’d be more likely to shop there.

Why you should support this campaign

  • 9 in 10 people in Northern Ireland are worried about the cost of their food and groceries.[1]
  • In relation to their overall expenditure, someone over 75 will spend almost twice as much on food than someone under 30.[2]
  • Households in Northern Ireland spend 10% more on food than the average UK household.[3]
  • UK food prices have risen by 26% between June 2007 and June 2011.[4] Over the same period, the state pension has increased by only 17%.
  • Fruit and vegetables are more expensive in the UK than in other EU countries. Prices in the UK were 23% above the EU average in 2010.[5]
