Platform supports petition against 'granny tax' PDF Print E-mail

Age Sector Platform is supporting a new online petition calling on the government to reverse its decision to freeze the age related personal tax allowances for the over 65s from April 2013.  The petition can be seen by clicking HERE.

At present, the petition has gathered over 30,000 supporters.  If it gains the support of 100,000 people, then a debate on the issue must be considered by the House of Commons.

Patricia Donald, Chair of Age Sector Platform, said: “The suggestion that pensioners are escaping the austerity measures being imposed by the Westminster government is pure fabrication.  Not only did pensioners lose up to £100 from our winter fuel payment last year, our pensions have also been attacked by the change in the up-rating measure from the Retail Price Index to the Consumer Price Index.”

“We recognise that all age groups are currently finding it difficult to get by, and the austerity measures are hitting hard across society as a whole.  However, older people are in a unique situation where their income is fixed and they also face the highest levels of inflation of any age group due to the level of expenditure on food and fuel.”

Age Sector Platform is encouraging all those who are against the announcement made by the Chancellor in last week's Budget to sign the petition as a matter of urgency.
